Environmental Justice Month
The outdoors is something that people of all backgrounds should have the opportunity to enjoy. However, environmental racism is a reality — people of color are disproportionately affected by pollution, yet recreational visitors to public lands are overwhelmingly white.
“Collectively, minorities make up just over 20 percent of the visitors to national parks, despite the fact that they make up nearly 40 percent of the U.S. population” (NPR). If the National Parks were “America’s best idea,” shouldn’t we all have the opportunity to enjoy them?
Peaks and Professors is committed to improving access to the outdoors for everyone - particularly for groups that are currently severely underrepresented on the trails. With this goal in mind, we are fundraising until Friday, August 7th for the following organizations:
Earth Justice is a non-profit law firm that represents clients fighting for better environmental policies at no cost to them. Donate via GoFundMe
Wild Diversity seeks to diversify the outdoors landscape by working with marginalized youth through their Leadership Development Training Program for BIPOC and LGBTQ communities. Donate via GoFundMe
The Innocence Project is working to free wrongly incarcerated individuals using DNA testing and bring reform to the system responsible for their unjust sentences. Donate via GoFundMe
The Deep South Center for Environmental Justice is dedicated to improving the lives of families harmed by pollution in the Gulf Coast through research, education, community engagement, and health and safety training for environmental careers. Donate via GoFundMe
Through July 19th, all proceeds to the Innocence Project will be matched 2:1 by organizations we have partnered with! If you are interested in donating to these causes, please use the GoFundMe page links posted above. Alternatively, please send us your preferred amount to @Peaksandprofessors via Venmo and specify which organization it is intended for.
