Inspiration Point via Mt Lowe Road w/ Tom Buchanan {Medicine}

  • Mount Wilson Red Box Road & Mount Lowe Road, Angeles National Forest, Altadena, CA 91001 (map)

Join this uncle and niece, professor and trip lead duo for a scenic Sunday stroll in the Angeles National Forest. We will hike around 7 miles, stopping halfway through to enjoy a panoramic view of the City of Angles and use some of the only telescopes in LA which remain free to this day. We’ll be enjoying sweeping views of the San Gabriel Mountains and riveting conversations about the genetics and prevention of type 2 diabetes with Vice Dean of Research, Tom Buchanan all the while!

PROFESSOR: TOM BUCHANA

DEPARTMENT: Medicine

Dr. Buchanan is the Vice Dean of Research for the Keck School of Medicine and professor of Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Physiology and Biophysics. He researches insulin resistance patterns in Hispanic Americans and helped run the first successful type 2 diabetes prevention study in the US. As if he’s not busy enough, Dr. Buchanan was also on the team which created the Southern California Clinical and Translational Science Institute, a National Institute of Health awarded program, which encourages scientific discoveries and helps apply them to real-life problems. When not in the lab, Dr. Buchanan can be found skiing in Mammoth, cycling in Angeles National Forest, or walking his three dogs, Alex, Jack, and Bean.
