Mt. Baldy w/ Bartlett Mel {Biomedical Engineering}

TRIP DESCRIPTION:

Come join your favorite Peaks People and hike to the highest point in LA! This hike is very challenging, but your hard work will pay off with some stunning views of the San Gabriel Mountains. One of SoCal’s “Six Pack of Peaks,” Mt. Baldy (formally Mt. San Antonio) is known for its tree-less rock face and provides a beautiful backdrop for DTLA. We will be starting at Manker Campground, ascending up the Devil’s Backbone trail, and descending down the Baldy Bowl/Ski Hut trail after we summit to complete an 11-mile loop. Get ready for a long day of adventure, good vibes, and even better people!

PACKING LIST:

  • Day pack

  • At least 3L of water (one water bottle is NOT enough! Bring at least 2)

  • Sunscreen/sunglasses/hat

  • Lunch/Snacks for the trail

  • Sturdy shoes (Hiking shoes/boots preferred)

  • WAIVERS

PROFESSOR: Bartlett Mel

Professor Mel studies Computational Neuroscience and Neural Engineering by using computer simulation models to study the brain. He is working on modeling the visual system, and he uses state-of-the-art technology to demonstrate how the brain recognizes objects in the world around it. He hopes to power intelligent machines with his artificial vision technology!

PEAK: Mt. San Antonio (Mt. Baldy)

DIFFICULTY: 5/5 (11 miles, 4000 ft of elevation gain)

SCENERY: Rocks, trees, more rocks, and maybe a bit of snow!

FUN FACT: On a clear day, you can see all the way from the Pacific ocean to Mojave from the summit :)
