Professor Portnoy is a professor of Spanish who researches food and culture in Los Angeles and beyond. Mexican food has a rich history in Los Angeles, from the loncheras (taco trucks) that first appeared on LAs’s streets in the 1980s to the high-end restaurants that exist today. Since food is integrated into nearly every aspect of life, from health to identity, it influences policymaking and is a fascinating topic to study. Profe has written several books, including Food, Health, and Culture in Latino L.A. Every year, Profe leads a Maymester class to Oaxaca, a region of Mexico that is famous for its rich cuisine. The class focuses on the connection between food and art, politics, immigration, and social justice. Students get to tour famous archeological sites, sample mole and other traditional Oaxacan food, and take cooking lessons from several local chefs.
