Professor Eich’s research regards why memory declines and how aging can affect cognition. Instead of thinking that older adults are losing memories, her research shows how they might instead be encoding irrelevant information. She uses functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) alongside psychological tests to approach these difficult questions. In her Neuroaffective Disorders of Aging class, she describes different theories of aging, such as the Life Course Theory which argues that the activities we do now and even from when we are born affect our aging process.
