Spend your Saturday soaking in breathtaking views of the San Fernando valley while getting a glimpse into the incredible processes behind our genetic code with Dr. Chi Mak. We’ll trek ~7 miles from Eaton Saddle to Inspiration Point, rising from the canyon oak and sycamore trees to panoramic views of Los Angeles amongst the clouds. History buff? This trip will take us by notable historic landmarks and along the ruins of the former Mt. Lowe scenic railway. Math and science more up your alley? Dr. Mak will join us and share some tales of his work using mathematical models to better understand the amazing chemical and biological mechanisms within our cells and DNA that provide the code behind our growth, reproduction, and everyday life.
Peak: Inspiration Point via Eaton Saddle
Difficulty: 3
Scenery: We'll start our trip amongst the trees in the canyon and end up far above the city, with sprawling views of the San Fernando Valley
Fun Fact: In addition to hosting some of the best views in the San Gabriel Mountains, this trip will follow along the tracks and ruins of the former Mt. Lowe Railway: a scenic railroad that ran from 1893-1938.
Professor: Chi Mak
Department: Chemistry
Ratemyprofessors: "Professor Mak taught me to think about biochemistry in a way I had never thought possible. I was blown away by the deductive approach he taught us to get us to understand the deeper aspects of biochemistry…He is exceptionally helpful and one of the best professors I have had at USC. His lectures are humorous."
Dr. Chi Mak combines excellence in teaching and research to advance our understanding of biochemistry and cellular machinery today. His research is primarily focused on a theoretical chemistry approach to investigating DNA, RNA, and other aspects of our genetic code, making use of efficient mathematical and algorithmic models to better understand the cell. As a recipient of the USC Associates Award for Excellence in Teaching and USC Provost's Teaching with Technology Prize in his 20 years of teaching, Dr. Mak has made a remarkable impact on the education of students and is known for injecting humor into his chemistry lectures while stressing a deductive approach to the teaching of biochemistry.
