Join math professor Neel on our trip to Ice House! He might be in the realm of mathematics at USC, but away from the concrete landscape, Neel has a knack for hikes and conversing with students. This more challenging day hike is just under 8 miles long as it loops near Mt. Baldy. At the top of this peak, we’ll reach a total of 2,637 ft in elevation so be sure to wear good shoes and hydrate before hand. The trek gives a beautiful look at the Cucamonga Wilderness as we learn more about this admired professor!
SIDE NOTE: Our location is fortunately and unfortunately called Ice House for a reason. If the trail is too icy/snowy we will be hiking Runyon Canyon. More details to come closer to the trip date!
PROFESSOR: Neel Tiruviluamala
DEPARTMENT: Mathematics
RATE MY PROFESSOR: "One of the best professors at USC”
Neel Tiruviluamala is a firm advocate that “math is fun.” Being that math is terrifying to some, myself included, Neel takes it upon himself to ensure that students prioritize curiosity over perfection by explaining concepts in ways that are easy to understand. As a Faculty in Residence in 2018, he even held math parties on Friday nights to encourage participation in STEM, proving how approachable he is. When a student once mentioned that she didn’t know if she was even good at math, Neel had to say ‘this doesn’t matter – what’s more important is, do you enjoy it?.’”
PEAK: Ice House Canyon Trail
DIFFICULTY: 4/5
SCENERY: Two miles of our hike follows a stream along the trail. The main destination of our hike, Saddle Ice House, gives a sneak peak of Mt. Baldy and Ontario Peak from the top.
FUN FACT: We’ll be passing by a half dozen ruins of stone foundations left behind from the early days of the Angeles Forest.
TRIP LEAD: Emily Johnson
One time I unknowingly carried around an open flour sack in Vons for 10+ mins - so you know you’re in good hands!
