Join Professor of Environmental Studies and marine biologist extraordinaire Dr. Dave Ginsburg on an exploration of the tide pools and sea caves of Leo Carrillo State Beach! The beach is known for its tide-pool viewing, and we plan to reach the beach at low tide to see as many ocean creatures as possible. We’ll see anemones, sea hares, snails, sea stars, urchins and more — and Dr. Ginsburg will tell us all about the tide pool habitats and the many marine species that call the tidal zone home!
NOTE: The rocky tide pools are covered with algae and are extremely slippery, so PLEASE choose footwear that can get wet and has optimal traction (no flip-flops, Crocs, Birks, etc). If you’re unsure of your shoe choice, please contact me and I can provide suggestions!

Professor Ginsburg is interested in the organization and dynamics of natural communities. His studies incorporate multiple levels of biological analyses, from the whole organism to the level of individual genes, and bridge the fields of cell biology, physiology, chemistry, ecology, as well as environmental management and policy. Some of his recent projects have focused on the tracking of microbial contaminants and pathogens in coastal waters using real-time molecular techniques and the conservation and management of marine protected areas in Micronesia.
