PROFESSOR: Dr. Jill Sohm

DEPARTMENT: Environmental Studies (Dornsife)

RATE MY PROFESSOR: "Professor Sohm is what I think about when I think of a good professor"

Dr. Sohm is a biological oceanographer, which means she studies the interaction between organisms and the ocean. Specifically, she investigates how different cyanobacteria are distributed in the ocean and the effect that can have on ocean chemistry. She has also done similar work in coastal sediments and in the Dry Valleys of Antarctica! She will answer everything you want to know about the nitrogen cycle, its effect on the growth of phytoplankton, and what it’s like to have been on more than ten oceanographic cruises!

PEAK: Stunt High Trail

DIFFICULTY: 3/5

SCENERY: We will first descend into an oak grove, follow the banks of Cold Creek, and then ascend into open fields with incredible views of the Santa Monica Mountains.

FUN FACT: The trail and surrounding areas are named after the Stunt family, who homesteaded the land in the 19th century. In the 20th century, the Stunts invited outdoor enthusiasts, especially youth, to enjoy the land, expressing their commitment to outdoor education.
