Santa Cruz Island w/ Rebecca Broyer {Chemistry}

Come voyage with us across the high seas to the far-away lands (20 miles off the coast) of Channel Islands National Park! We’ll hike along cliffs overlooking the ocean, hang out on da beach, sleep on the dirt for two nights, and attempt to stop our fox neighbors from breaking into our tents.

We’ll take the ferry from Ventura Friday morning and sail back home on Sunday afternoon! We’ll also have a short backpacking moment during the hike in from the ferry to the campsite.

PACKING LIST:

  • LOTS of layers! Temps can be anywhere from 40-70 degrees Fahrenheit. Bring warm clothes for night, layers for hiking, etc.

  • A raincoat (we’re not in LA anymore)

  • Dramamine / anti-nausea medication for the boat ride if you need it

  • Sturdy hiking boots/shoes

  • Beach shoes + clothes

  • A sleeping bag & pad if you have them

  • Flashlight/Headlamp

  • Mess kit: 1-2 bowls/tupperwares, fork, knife, spoon, napkins.

  • Toothbrush & general life items

  • Sunglasses, sunscreen, hat

  • Snacks! Everyone has that ~one kind of bar~ they can’t live without.

  • Camera (if you have one!)

  • H2O- 2-3 full liters per person! hydration is cool

  • WAIVERS

WE WILL PROVIDE:

  • Sleeping bags/pads if you don’t have one already!

  • Tents

  • Friday Dinner, Saturday Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner, Sunday Breakfast (BYO Friday and Sunday Lunch)

  • Ferry Tickets

  • A Channel-Islands-Worthy playlist



PROFESSOR: Rebecca Broyer

DEPARTMENT: Chemistry

Dr. Broyer, a mainstay in the Chemistry Department at USC, is primarily focused on organic chemistry inside the classroom, but has vast and numerous outdoors interests outside of the classroom. Find her hiking, backpacking, surfing, or snowboarding - regardless of the season, she’ll be spending her free time outdoors.

SCENERY: 360 ocean views, cute island foxes, rugged cliffs, and peaceful beaches

FUN FACT: There are eight channel islands, and Santa Cruz is the largest!
